Wolfgang Herr studied Human Medicine at Universities of Mainz, Tübingen and Jena, and graduated from University of Mainz in 1991. He completed his residency in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Department of Medicine III at University of Mainz. He also did research fellowships for training in tumor immunolgy in Pittsburgh/USA and in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in Seattle/USA.

Since 2013, he has served as the Director of Department of Medicine III – Hematology and Medical Oncology – at the University Hospital Regensburg (UKR). In 2019, he became the Research Dean (Forschungsdekan) elected by the Medical Faculty of the University of Regensburg.

Since 2018, he has been the Spokesperson of the Collaborative Research Centre Transregio 221. In 2022, he became the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Centre for Tumor Diseases Würzburg, Erlangen, Regensburg, Augsburg (NCT WERA).

His long-standing scientific focus lies in the immunobiology of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cell therapy, with a particular emphasis on translating promising basic research concepts into early-phase clinical trials.”
