Our teams investigate how metabolic stress affects T-cell function after allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Our work is based on our recent findings showing that metabolic dysregulation and DNA damage (remove: responses) can impair T-cell fitness, thereby limiting graft-versus-leukemia activity and increasing the risk of AML relapse. Using advanced molecular and cellular approaches, we aim to identify mechanisms that drive post-transplant T-cell dysfunction and explore novel strategies to restore durable anti-leukemic immunity. Insights from this work may also help improve other adoptive T-cell therapies, including CAR-T and TCR-engineered cell therapies.
I’m the Director of the University Clinic for Hematology, Oncology, Cell- and Radiotherapy at the Otto von Guericke, University Magdeburg. I’m a clinician-scientist with expertise in allogeneic stem cell transplantation, tumor immunology, and cellular immunotherapies. My research focuses on mechanisms regulating T-cell fitness and function, with the goal of improving cellular therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases.
Within the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio (CRC/TRR) 221 innovative immune modulation strategies will be investigated to separate GvHD from GvL effects in order to enhance the safety and efficacy of allo-HSCT in the future.
