New Study Identifies Immune Mechanism Linking Stem Cell Transplantation to Accelerated Atherosclerosis
CRCT 221 scientists have uncovered new experimental evidence showing that allogenic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) may directly accelerate the development of atherosclerosis, offering a potential explanation for the increased cardiovascular risk observed in long-term transplant survivors.

CRC TRR 221 scientist Hendrik Poeck and his team have uncovered an unexpected way the immune system helps repair the intestine after damage caused by cancer therapies such as radiation, chemotherapy, or bone marrow transplantation. These findings are now published in the journal Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy.

DFG Awards €17.4 Million to CRC TRR 221 for a Third Funding Period
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) has granted a third consecutive four-year funding period to the Collaborative Research Center Transregio 221 (CRC TRR 221), coordinated by the University of Regensburg. The consortium will receive €17.4 million to further its groundbreaking work in the field of immunology and stem cell transplantation.

Microbial Molecule Offers New Hope Against Dangerous Transplant Complication
A team of researchers from the University Hospital Regensburg (UKR) at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Internal Medicine III and Leibniz-Institute for Immunotherapy (LIT), together with collaborators in Munich and international partners, has discovered that desaminotyrosine (DAT), a natural compound produced by gut bacteria, can protect patients from the often-deadly complication of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) following bone marrow transplantation—while maintaining anti-cancer immune effects.

On October 5th, 2025, the 27th Leukämie Lauf – Leukemia Run – will take place in Regensburg. Several CRC T 221 scientists will once again join the event this year. Every year, around 16,500 young adults are diagnosed with cancer. The disease causes major disruption to their family, career, and life plans, becoming an emotional and social challenge for them. Since 2015, the individual online counseling provided by the portal “JUNGES KREBSPORTAL” (JKP) – has offered young cancer patients free access to medical, professional, and volunteer experts.
